Toy Story Theme at Disneyland Paris

All the fun and thrills of the films as the characters loom above you in the latest attraction at Disneyland in Paris

You’ve seen the movies, and bought everything from talking figures of Buzz Lightyear to Toy Story tissues — now prepare to be nagged to take the children to Toy Story Playland. The latest addition to Disneyland Paris opens on Tuesday, inspired by the backyard where Andy played with his toys.

Designed to make you feel as if you’ve shrunk to toy size, Playland features oversized toys, including Buzz himself, which are strewn among giant grass. The best way to appreciate the altered sense of scale is from the top of the Toy Soldiers Parachute Drop, 27m up.

You can book flights to Paris, Charles De Gaulle Airport which is within sniffing distance of the Disneyland Europe resort. On a preview visit last week, I sat beneath a camouflaged parachute canopy, taking in the oversized Christmas tree lights, the path bearing Andy’s huge footprint, and the inevitable shop selling Toy Story merchandise. But it’s a view you can enjoy only for a second. Following Sarge’s “Go, go, go,” you bounce back to earth, your tummy plummeting through your feet.

The parachute drop is one of only three rides in what is a relatively small new land aimed at younger children. A second ride, Slinky Dog Zigzag Spin, is inspired by retro “caterpillar rides”, while there are large talking models of T-Rex and Buzz Lightyear. But as I listen to Buzz, I realise something is missing. “If you see Woody, tell him I need new batteries,” says Buzz. But Woody is absent from the land where he should be a star attraction. “There are many toys you won’t see in the park,” says David Wilson, one of the park’s creators.

Andy’s remote controlled car, is present, though, inviting you to join him in Playland’s star attraction, RC Racer, a daring half-pipe manoeuvre on a Hot Wheels track. This ride, with a height restriction of 120cm, is not nearly as gentle as the other two. As I sit at the front of Andy’s radio-controlled toy car, we race 25 metres up the half pipe, so fast it really feels like we will fly off and launch ourselves into the air before we head backwards in a stomach-lurching move. Closing my eyes, all I can think of is Buzz’s catch phrase: “To Infinity and Beyond.”
